It took Grétry only a few years to become one of the most prominent personalities in the French musical world. The success of his first opéra comique, Le Huron (1769), earned him the esteem and personal attachment of the Dauphine. The court then opened its doors to him; several of his works were performed there consecutively. 1773 was the year of official consecration: Louis XV’s Versailles commissioned him to write an ambitious work for the occasion, Céphale & Procris.
