Dardanus
Tragédie lyrique. Paris, 1744
The Centre de musique baroque de Versailles and the Hungarian conductor György Vashegyi release a new unpublished recording of the second version of Rameau’s Dardanus (1744).
After Les Fêtes de Polymnie (2014), Naïs (2017) and Les Indes galantes (2018), the CMBV and its loyal Hungarian partner continue to revive the still unpublished versions of the operas of the greatest French composer of the eighteenth century, Jean-Philippe Rameau. This time, they are tackling the re-creation of Dardanus, Rameau’s last preserved lyrical tragedy and its second version, dating from 1744, in which the action was significantly modified.
Considered a masterpiece of balance and refinement by the "Ramists", this version has never been performed again in its entirety. Taking advantage of the work in progress on the composer and the new edition of the work supervised by Denis Herlin in the Rameau Opera Omnia collection, this Dardanus reveals dozens of totally extraordinary pages, entrusted to an orchestra and choir currently considered among the best in this repertoire, and to a luxurious cast led by Judith Van Wanroij and Cyrille Dubois, playing a couple of mistreated lovers left at the mercy of a fierce rival sung by Tassis Christoyannis.
