The musical work of Toulouse music master Bernard-Aymable Dupuy (1707–1789) is now well represented by three scores composed for his hometown.
In Toulouse and the surrounding region, it was traditional to celebrate the birth of Christ with a musical work performed in churches on Christmas Day and the 4th Sunday in January. In 1749, Dupuy proposed a Noël in French. The angels announce the Saviour’s birth to the shepherds in a dialogue between the shepherds, the angels and the instruments. The 8 roles (4 shepherds and 4 angels) can be sung by 4 soloists (dessus, haute-contre, taille and basse). Two 4-voice choirs (dessus (div. for the angels), hautes-contre, taille, basse) are indicated (shepherds and angels), but they can be assigned to a single choir by arranging a small choir of angels (2 dessus and haute-contre) with the soloists (adding a dessus), or a semi-chorus, needed for a few bars of antiphony at the end of the work. The work, full of charm and freshness, is ideally suited to a concert or a Nativity play.
