Thésée
"Father of the Symphony", "singer of the Revolution": these two adjectives were enough to designate Gossec at the beginning of the nineteenth century, making his reputation into a mould that the musicographers and musicologists of the following century would turn into a veritable tombstone. However, the artist was always interested in the operatic stage, distinguishing himself as much in the modern genre of opéra comique as in the more traditional genre of tragédie en musique. Called upon to collaborate with the greatest institutions of his time, Gossec had more than twenty works performed with very different fortunes but which, in many cases, reveal first-rate stagecraft. His two lyrical tragedies, Sabinus (1773) and Thésée (1782), are unquestionably his masterpieces in the operatic field.
