In the first half of the 17th century, the air de cour was undoubtedly one of the most emblematic musical genres in France. Better known today in its form for voice and lute, this multifaceted genre also exists in polyphonic versions for four or five parts, sometimes requiring large ensembles. Enhanced by the music, the poetry, by turns laudatory and gallant, served the ballets of Louis XIII, celebrating his victories and the glory of the French monarchy, or recounting the joys and sorrows of love. François de Chancy, Maître de la Musique de la Chambre du roi, was one of the most brilliant composers of the late reign of Louis XIII and among the most emblematic figures of the air de cour, alongside Pierre Guédron, Antoine Boesset, Étienne Moulinié and François Richard. These two volumes present the entirety of his 2nd book of court airs in 4 parts published by Robert Ballard in 1644, namely 25 pieces for 3 and 4 mixed voices, with basso continuo accompaniment ad libitum.
