Louis Homet (1691–1767) began his career under Marc-Antoine Charpentier and Nicolas Bernier. He later appeared as Chantre at Chartres Cathedral, then as maître de chapelle at Saint-Jacques de la Boucherie in Paris. In 1711, he composed this 5-voice motet (dessus, hautes-contre, tailles, basses-tailles and basses) with basso continuo for the competition for the position of maître de chapelle at Évreux Cathedral. Sébastien de Brossard, who had been asked by the canons to decide between the candidates, wrote a long letter describing the qualities of the best motet, in his opinion that of Homet, and asked for the name of this promising composer. Louis Homet remained at Évreux for some 13 years, before moving on to Orléans Cathedral in 1724, that of Chartres in 1731 and then the prestigious Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris in 1734.
