This new score by Toulouse music master Bernard-Aymable Dupuy (1707–1789) reveals a new aspect of the musical heritage of the Midi-Pyrénées region and of the composer’s musical career. Together with the Messe from the Marcorelles manuscript, it complements the already published motet Nisi quia Dominus erat in nobis.
Dupuy was a young composer when he wrote the motet Exurge Domine in 1738 for the competitive examination for the position of Maître de musique at Saint-Étienne Cathedral in Toulouse. He offered his future employers a fine illustration of his musical mastery, with a scoring comprising a five-voice choir (divided dessus, hautes-contre, tailles, basses tailles and basses), four soloists (dessus, haute-contre, taille, basse), accompanied by violins and continuo.
