Présentation :
Created in 1784 at the Académie royale de musique, from which it made a fortune, La Caravane du Caire was one of Grétry’s most famous operas, its reputation continuing into the nineteenth century. The libretto bears witness to the marked taste of the late eighteenth century for oriental subjects; the beautiful Zélime, sold as a slave to a Pasha, is delivered from the seraglio by her beloved, the courageous Saint-Phar. The work is full of comic situations, tender airs and bravura pieces (including a pastiche of an Italian "coloratura" aria) and embellished with brilliant ballets in an original exotic vein.
