Les Nations, Vol. 2
second ordre "L'Espagnole"
These instrumental parts, in a modern edition, reproduce the original parts exactly, including the editorial work essential to the proper performance of these works. A figured bass has been added for keyboard players who have little experience with continuo playing.
Couperin uses generic terms to designate his separate parts. He further states that all his trios "can be performed on two harpsichords, as well as on all other instruments." One might think that, like the Concerts royaux, Les Nations "is suitable not only for the harpsichord, but also for the violin, flute, oboe, viola and bassoon", or that, like Les Goûts réunis, it is "suitable for use on all kinds of musical instruments". The tessitura of the parts, however, indicates a precise number of players: two violins, viola and harpsichord. The Dessus parts are too low for wind instruments; the "basse d'archet" is too high for the basse de violon of Couperin's time; the figured bass part is too high for the theorbo.
