Les Nations, vol. 1
premier ordre "La Française"
Interpreters who perform Couperin’s Les Nations nowadays often reject modern editions in favour of facsimiles of the Louis Hue engraving. The great beauty of the latter gives the impression that it is reliable. However, this is far from being the case, and this problem is compounded by its being published in separate parts. In addition to the necessary editorial work (notes, rhythms, dynamics, articulations, ornaments, tempo indications etc) that this requires, other ways of performing are overlooked, notably the one suggested by Couperin himself, for two harpsichords.
This new edition of Couperin’s Les Nations offers three references to provide performers with a high-quality and complete musical text, including:
- a score, with an introduction and critical notes;
- the four separate parts, with a realisation of the basso continuo part;
- the version for two harpsichords (one part per keyboard) according to Couperin’s instructions.
