Deitatis Majestatem is a grand motet composed for Louis XIV’s chapelle royale by the young Michel-Richard de Lalande, appointed by the king himself in 1683 following a competition between the kingdom’s greatest composers. Following in the footsteps of his illustrious predecessors, notably Henry Du Mont, this motet is characterised by sharp contrasts, abrupt changes of scoring (duo, trio, small choir/large choir) and rhythm, in direct response to the psalm text.
