Le Départ de la Renommée
This is a isolated air from the composer’s heroic idyll Présents des Dieux, performed in 1727 at the court of Versailles for the birth of Louis XV’s daughters Mesdames Elisabeth and Henriette. Conceived in this form for Madame de Pompadour, this cantatille was given at the Théâtre des Petits-Appartements in 1748. Copied in 1750 by Brice, the King’s copyist, it is now preserved in Madrid in a false collection with the cantatille Regrets des Beaux-Arts.
This little cantata for women’s voices does not use a very wide range (from E4 to G5), but uses vocalise a great deal to illustrate the flight of the Nymphs evoked by the text "O vous qui d'une aile légère…" by Abbé Pellegrin. It is a da capo aria, magnificently accompanied by violins and oboes.
