Dix fugues d'orgue, vol. 4
The Dix fugues d'orgue (Ten organ fugues) contained in this new volume complete the series devoted by the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles to all known fugues composed by Jean-Jacques Beauvarlet-Charpentier, who ended his career as organist of Notre-Dame de Paris. They complete the 18 others published in previous volumes, devoted respectively to the Six fugues pour l'orgue ou le clavecin (Paris, Le Duc, 1777), the six fugues from Journal d'orgue no 2 released by the same publisher in 1784, and those collected by a German organist, Leodogar Andermath, at the end of the 18th century, in a manuscript collection now preserved in Berlin. These pieces, which differ greatly in style and conception, are based on cantus firmus in several cases. Printed during the 1780s in various issues of the Journal d'orgue, they have been brought together here for lovers of the fugue, in a collection modelled on Andermath’s manuscript. This new release will be of particular interest to lovers of fine French counterpoint, as well as to organ teachers, who will find here new repertoire for their students, providing a good itnroduction to French classical keyboard music. These fugues last around 5 minutes each, and are respectively in E minor, D minor, C minor, D minor, D major, F major, E minor, A minor, G minor and C major.
