Presintation:
The music composed by Charpentier for Molière’s La Comtesse d’Escarbagnas and Le Mariage forcé were grouped together by H. Wiley Hitchcock under the same catalogue number [H.494], here defined as [H.494i] and [H.494ii]. Indeed, the two comedies were performed together in the summer of 1672, with new music, which Charpentier copied out one following on from the other. The place of Charpentier’s musical insertions, and even their connection with the plays, are difficult to establish. It is therefore difficult to represent these comedies of Molière with Charpentier’s interludes. Musicians can perform the pieces separately or as a suite with this complete concert kit.
