The Sonate pour piano-forte à 4 mains is the 5th volume devoted to this composer by Éditions du Centre de musique baroque de Versailles. Jean-François Tapray (1738–1819), born in Nomeny, Lorraine, spent most of his career in Dole and then Besançon, before serving in Paris as organist at the chapel of the École royale militaire shortly before the French Revolution. He died in Fontainebleau around 1819. This sonata for four hands, which probably dates from 1800, is a true masterpiece inspired by the Viennese school of the time. It makes a great impact in concert, and has the immense merit of giving equal opportunity to both instrumentalists. It requires a good technique, especially in the superb sonata-rondo 3rd movement.
