Six fugues d'orgues, Journal d'orgue (1784), vol. 2
Jean-Jacques Beauvarlet, who called himself Charpentier, was born in Abbeville in 1734. He began his career as an organist in Lyon, following in his father’s footsteps, and began performing at the city’s Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1765. his music was performed in 1759 at the famous Concert-Spirituel, and he moved to the capital in 1772, where he enjoyed a brilliant career. He was organist at several prestigious churches, and in 1783 was given a quarter at Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. He died in Paris in May 1794. These 6 fugues, published in the 2nd volume (1784) of the Journal d'orgue (12 issues), illustrate his style, which attempts to adapt the language of the new fortepiano to the organ: doubled octaves, repeated chords, Alberti basses... This original edition has required considerable work to restore all the work’s alterations. Not exceeding 5 minutes in length, these 6 pieces are of medium difficulty.
