Motets à 3 voix
It is not impossible that all these manuscript motets were deliberately included in Brossard’s bequest to the King, as they complement the printed collection and seem to fit together; they are arranged in the same way as the printed volumes, according to vocal register, staff, key and liturgical time.
Brossard’s Miserere is obviously inspired by Michel-Richard de Lalande’s Miserere with alternating plainchant verses, which Brossard owned and for which he had made an arrangement in the same style. His work on Lalande’s motet – probably at the request of the nuns of Meaux – certainly inspired Brossard to compose his own piece on the same model.
