In 1683, Louis XIV decided to reorganise the music of his newly installed chapel at Versailles. He organised a competition inviting all composers attached to the French choir schools to compose a work for consideration. Michel-Richard de Lalande wrote the beautiful motet Beati quorum remissæ sunt, the subject of this edition, which led to his being offered the post of maître de la Chapelle royale for one quarter of the year, the start of his prestigious career.
