Ave verum H.329 & H.523 by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, composed to accompany the Corpus Christi procession of 1683, is one of the very few examples in the 17th century of petits motets (motets for solo voices) with a full orchestral complement, including viola parts as in the great motets.
The resulting harmonic and contrapuntal density gives rise to an original form halfway between the petit motet without orchestra and the grand motet for choir and orchestra.
