Presintation:
Born in the diocese of Clermont-Ferrand and director of music for the Jesuits from 1660 to 1675, where he was employed from 1621, we have little information on the biography of Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy (1601–1675). He distinguished himself with an ambitious publishing project: to publish almost all the music required for parish services. Today incomplete, this three-volume publication comprised over 1,200 pages. In the manner of Henry Du Mont’s Cantica Sacra, the composer proposed an easy system of octave transposition to enable these pieces to be sung by an ensemble of women’s or men’s voices, or by mixed voices, with basso-continue. The present Mass concludes the last volume of this anthology, published in 1661. Originally written for 4 voices "à la française" (soprano, haute-contre, ténor, basse), it can easily be performed independently by 4 mixed voices as is, by 4 high voices (2 soprani, 2 alti) or by 4 low voices (haute-contre, ténor, baryton, basse), accompanied by basso continuo.

Commentary:
