On his arrival in Paris in 1751, François-Joseph Gossec was welcomed by Rameau, who was then conducting the orchestra of the fermier général Le Riche de La Pouplinière. In 1755, Gossec took over the direction of this orchestra, for which he wrote his first symphonies. At this time, he wrote the first bars of his famous Missa pro defunctis [RH.501]. In 1762, Gossec emerged as one of the most gifted musicians of his generation. The Sinfonias opus VIII were published shortly before 1765 and quickly achieved great success.
