Présentation :
This 6th volume in the series of the composer’s Histoires sacrées (11th volume in the first monumental collection in a modern edition devoted to the work of the composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier) presents all those written when the artist was in the service of Mlle de Guise: Cædes sanctorum innocentium [H.41], Nuptiæ sacræ [H.412], Cæcilia virgo et martyr [H.413, 415-415a] et In nativitatem Domini Nostri Jesu Christi Canticum [H. 414]. The originality of these oratorios lies in their intended use: as sacred salon works, they were all originally written for women’s voices (rather than children’s). Moreover, the division of the 6 voices into two equal groups of men and women offers Charpentier a wealth of possible configurations, which he uses with skill. They can be performed by a small vocal ensemble of 7, 8 or 12 singers, depending on the subject matter, joined by two high instruments (Dessus de violes that can also be played on the violin) and a continuo with harpsichord or organ, or both. In her introduction, C. Jane Gosine provides all the information needed to date the work, both the musical sources, based on the most recent research in the field, and the historical elements of the music of the Guise family, which enable her to detail the distribution of the singers, and from which the performers can draw inspiration. Xavier Bisaro completes this study by highlighting the sacred nature of the librettos in the religious context of the 17th century, emphasising their finesse, relevance and innovative ideas. The massacre of the innocents, the sacred nuptials from the Song of Songs, St. Cecilia the virgin and martyr, the Cantique on the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, for Christmas, are all related to the liturgical calendar and theological debates. After this introduction in French and English, the volume continues with the librettos (given in Latin, French and English) accompanied by a contemporary account (French). After several examples of the manuscript in facsimile come the 4 sacred narratives in modern score, accompanied by critical apparatus. In the appendix, the second version of Cæcilia virgo [H.415] and its prologue [H.415a] are also included in score. The 5 works are also available for performance separately, with sets of parts. C. Jane Gosine is Associate Professor in the Department of Musicology at Memorial University of Newfoundland (St John’s, NL, Canada). Xavier Bisaro is a lecturer in the Musicology Department at Université Paul Valéry (Montpellier III) and a member of the IRCL (Institut de recherche sur la Renaissance, l'Âge Classique et les Lumières).
