Messes, vol. 4
This fourth and final volume of the 11 masses composed by Marc-Antoine Charpentier. It is devoted to works for several choirs: the Messe pour les Trépassés [H. 2], the Messe à 8 voix et 8 instruments [H. 3] and the Messe à quatre chœurs [H. 4] . These early pieces (early 1670s), composed while Charpentier was in the service of Mlle de Guise, shortly after his return from Italy, show the influence of Italian polychorality, and particularly the writing of Carissimi. But Marc-Antoine Charpentier already reveals his perfect mastery of French choral writing.
